They may be hooked to the social media sites all day, but it may not stay for long. Surveys are indicating that the young urban Indians are showing signs of fatigue from social networking sites.
Majority of them are complaining that “compulsive social networking” has led to insomnia, depression, poor inter-personal relationships, lack of concentration, high level of anxiety, ignorance and rudeness in their general behaviour as they tend to replace real life social interactions with online social media.
The survey recently conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) claimed that due to fatigue factor and boredom youngsters in urban India have reduced the frequency of visits to Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Orkut, Linkedin, Myspace, Friendster, Hi5, BigAdda compared to the time they had signed up initially.
The survey was conducted among 2,000 youngsters in the age group of 12 to 25 years in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune between October to December last year.
The survey was conducted to examine current usage trends vis-a vis social networks among youngsters and time spent on these websites.
Almost 55% said they had consciously reduced the time spent on social media websites and were no longer as active and enthusiastic about their favourite social networks as when they had signed up. Nearly 30% have deactivated or deleted their accounts and profiles from these websites since it was no longer a craze among them. Respondents also said they found it “boring and sick” to see “constant senseless status updates” and the same thing over and over again.
Most of the remaining said they have started maintaining a low profile on social networks as their privacy was being breached and added they peep in to their profiles once in a blue moon.
About 20% of all the respondents said they hardly log on to social networking websites and preferred staying in touch with their folks via chat applications like Blackberry Messenger, Watsapp, Nimbuzz, Mig33, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger on their mobiles and computers.
About 75% of the total sample said they had made a profile or an account on almost each of these websites out of curiosity and since it was a fad among them when these websites were just launched. But most of these later stuck to a singular site and barely used others.
It was found that women flocked at social networks more frequently compared to men. Nearly 65% females said they tend to log onto social media almost everyday.
