Vishnu Marwadi is the new ‘king of the bootleggers’ in Ahmedabad. He has deposed Kailash Rathi and has replaced trucks and other modes of transport in the business with fast cars.

It’s the Toyotas and Hyundais that are zooming across the border from Rajasthan laden with 1500-1600 boxes of IMFL (Indian made foreign liquor) every day to quench the thirst of the city’s tipplers in the festive season.

There’s a reason for the ‘rush’ to stock up. From Dec 25 to Jan 31, police say they will seal the state’s northern borders and the liquor flow will dry up. The bootlegging gang is ready for the festive challenge. Jyotram  Bishnoi calls the shots from Amirgarh in Rajasthan where he is the chief supplier for ‘goods’ meant for Gujarat.

In the Sardarnagar area in Ahmedabad, which is infamous for its booze joints, Raju Gendi, Sonu Sindhi and Jayed Beru rule the roost. Haryana used to be the main place from where liquor was ‘imported’ into Gujarat, but now there is only a lone hand, the notorious Anil Kumar Jain, on the police’s wanted list for the past five years, who is pushing the stuff into Gujarat.

They are all gearing up to meet the Xmas and New Year demand. Once the illicit liquor lands in Ahmedabad, it is hidden in fields on the outskirts of the city. “No one dare ‘tell’ about these ‘warehouses,’ a source said. The  personal delivery system is broadly divided into two parts: order over the phone for house/office supply or purchase it from the bootlegger’s ‘jurisdiction’ which is the police station areas that he controls.

Despite the huge supplies rolling into the state the prices are shooting up, like other
more important items on the  consumers’ list. For example,  McDowells No 1 is going for Rs1500-2000.

The bootleggers buy the alcohol at Rs1500-1600 a box of 12 bottles and sell it for Rs2800-3200. The profit margins are high, and the risks relatively small. No wonder a wag said: “There’s more liquor consumed per head in Ahmedabad than in most ‘wet’ areas of the country.”
