Childhood is a time to carry your favourite novel or comic to the classroom and read during the lectures. These days, life has become so time-consuming that it leaves little time to unwind, introspect, imagine or even read. However, some among the younger generation are badly bitten by the bookworm bug and cannot bear to see the habit of reading dying before their eyes.

It was this desire that provided a solution to this issue. Ranjini Shastri, a student of psychology at St Xavier’s College, and Pooja Mehta, an alumna of St Xavier’s, have launched Satori, a forum for booklovers, budding writers, poets and musicians.

“Satori,” Ranjini said, “is a Japanese Buddhist term that means ‘flash of sudden awareness’, which is what we plan on imparting through this club. Satori is a place where budding poets, editors, writers, storytellers and readers can share their experience with books, their experiments in writing and the learning process they have gone through in their lives, and have fun too.”

Recently launched, the club has 15 members and plans on expanding further. Satori is also active on social-networking sites like Facebook and Orkut. The members plan to meet on one Sunday every month and share their knowledge on various books.

According to Pooja, many people regularly write poetry and short stories, but are reluctant to make public the poet or writer within them. “Satori is a platform for all those who are ready to confess their flair for writing,” she said. The members of the club will be provided information on online writing competitions, publications and educational institutes for their aid.

Viren Merchant, an engineer who has joined the group, stated his purpose in joining. “Since my schooldays, I had been very interested in literature and language, but could not pursue it further. I feel I will be able to come closer to my passion here,” he said.
Satori plans to include music and jam sessions, and also encourage lyricists in the
future. “A few members are good at some

musical instruments. On one of the Sundays, we plan to have a jam session and film a biographical sketch of interesting people,” Ranjini said.
