DODA: In a shocking incident, a schoolteacher in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir allegedly punished his students by throwing acid on them. At least seven students were severely injured when Aijaz Ahmed, a teacher at the Nag Batni High School in a remote village of Doda, took this extreme step to punish his pupils.

The wounded students told reporters that the teacher came running out of the laboratory and sprayed the corrosive substance on the students playing in the courtyard of the school building block.

Among those scarred for life is six-year-old Ali who has suffered 70 per cent burn injuries on his face. His left eye has been permanently damaged.

Though the children tried to save themselves, not all could run to safety. "We picked our bags and started running. He threw acid at us. Some received it on their backs other on their face," says Sunil Kumar, a student.

It is still not known why Ahmed wanted to punish these children. He has been absconding after the incident and the district administration has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

"We are looking into what prompted the teacher to throw acid at the children," says Doda Deputy Commissioner, Pawan Kotwal.

The parents said they were shocked when the children returned home (some were carried by older children on their backs) with burnt faces and clothes.

“I was alone at my home when a girl of 9th standard brought my son Asgar Ali, 6, on her back. Ali was screaming due to severe pain. His face was completely deformed due to burns,” said Saleema Begum. “I couldn’t go to the school immediately and see what had happened because it is seven km from my house. I immediately took Ali to a private medical practitioner at Kandni on Kishtwar Batote highway, who gave him the first aid and suggested me to shift Ali to Doda,” Saleema said. She said she couldn’t afford to shift her son to Doda for treatment.
