After Anil Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal, it was the turn of another industry bigwig to describe Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as prime ministerial material.

"We should all hope that chief minister Narendra Modi soon becomes the PM of India," Basant Kumar Birla, the patriarch of Birla Group of companies, said in Jhagadia in Bharuch district on Thursday. Birla, who is also chairman of Century Textiles & Industries Limited, made the comment while speaking at the inauguration of Century's new textile mill.

A visibly pleased Modi responded, saying "Khabarwalo ko khabar mil gaye hai (newsmen have got the news). I was wondering whether or how reports of today's event will appear in newspapers. But, this statement by BK Birla will make headlines tomorrow." Birla, who kept seated on the dias during the entire function stood up just once to make this statement.

Birla also handed over a cheque of Rs21 lakh as donation towards chief minister's Kanya Kelavani Fund.

Reliance ADAG chairman Anil Ambani and Bharti Airtel head Sunil Bharti Mittal had described Modi as PM material during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit earlier this year. Tata Group chairman, Ratan Tata is also among those who have openly praised the CM and his style of functioning.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group, also showered praises on Gujarat and the CM. "Gujarat is witnessing massive transformation under the bold and dynamic vision of CM Modi. He has successfully and firmly put Gujarat on the path to prosperity. The Vibrant Gujarat events have transformed Gujarat into the preferred investment destination for everyone," the young Birla said. Sarla Birla, the wife of BK Birla, was also all praise for Modi describing him as an able and visionary leader.

"Gujarat is a shining example of India's economic development. All this is due to the able leadership provided to the state by Narendra Modi," she said. Modi thanked SK Birla and Kumar Mangalam Birla for completing the work on the textile mill the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for which was signed at 2007 Vibrant Gujarat Investors summit.
