A senior BJP leader from Haryana was today arrested by the police after he surrendered in a case registered against him and some of his supporters for rioting, blocking traffic and stopping a public servant from performing their duties.
"We have arrested MLA from Ambala Cantt Anil Vij under various sections of the IPC, after he surrendered and he is being produced in a local court here," Ambala's superintendent of police, Bharti Arora said.
She said that so far seven people including Vij were arrested in the case. The BJP workers, led by the MLA, had launched an agitation after a sarpanch was allegedly assaulted by traffic police personnel on November 22.
They had blocked Ambala-Jagadhri road for hours demanding action against the police personnel.
Yesterday, the BJP workers had burnt the effigy of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in front of the Sadar Bazar police station here.
Many INLD and Haryana Janhit Congress workers had also joined the protest.
