Political parties have initiated efforts to strengthen their network ahead of the civic body elections to be held in October 2010.

Even as some ticket aspirants are trying to create support base for themselves, incumbent corporators are busy lobbying for the same.

Though the top leadership of both the BJP and the Congress denied setting in motion preparation for the AMC election, workers gave a different version.

Commenting on the strategy of each party, a source said that BJP wants to tighten its grip on administration, if it returns to power for the consecutive second term. It may lead the saffron party to implement the plan it had successfully used in the Junagadh Municipal Corporation elections last year.

Sources said as was the case during the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) elections, the party may ask some of its senior leaders to fight the corporation polls in October.

Sources said this is because barring a couple of senior corporators in the ruling party, the rest have failed to create an aura about themselves.

They said that most of the corproators have no control over the local ward level officers resulting in heated arguments between them in public places. "Except for a few corporators, the officials do not bother to heed the rest and this deteriorates the image of the party among the public," said sources.

It should be noted that the BJP had made the JMC elections a prestigious issue and had asked its former MP Bhavna Chikliaya, who was minister in the union government, and former state minister Mahendra Mashru to contest the same in July 2009.
"If the BJP repeats the strategy it will help give the party a better control over the administration, when the party returns to power for the second term," said sources.

Meanwhile, sources said that around 20 to 25 people are likely to be repeated by the party. "An equal number of people will also be denied ticket, while the rest will have to go through the regular selection process and performance review," said the sources.

"Certain controversial corporators will be completely ruled out," said sources.

Sources in the Congress said that almost 40% of its present candidates will not be given ticket. "The party may introduce some young candidates instead of sticking to old guns who have represented the party in the AMC for three or more terms," said sources.
