The new president of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari, is burning the midnight oil to learn how to handle the notorious national press.

On Tuesday night, he arrived at the party headquarters at Ashok Road for a training capsule just before his first big press conference.

Waiting for him there was senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, two of the party’s spokespersons, media cell members and Ram Lal, the RSS’ man in the party. They gave Gadkari the lowdown on dealing with awkward questions and ducking embarrassing ones.

“With so much infighting in the party, there are bound to be some embarrassing questions, and we were just going through ways in which these could be turned into positives,” said a source in the BJP.

That wasn’t all. Early on Wednesday, he again met senior party leaders for more briefings.

A luncheon with former party president Murli Manohar Joshi was thrown in for good measure. “Unlike other leaders, Gadkariji has not had a stint in the central office before becoming president. Therefore, we felt he might need an orientation,” said the source.
