BJP on Tuesday dismissed earlier reports that a high-level team of senior leaders had been asked to look into charges of illegal land transfer against BS Yeddyurappa.

The team was formed in the face of stinging public criticism that threatened to puncture BJP’s anti-corruption campaign against the UPA government.

“No such committee is in place and Yeddyurappa has not been summoned to Delhi by the party high command,” a BJP leader clarified.

Admitting that the controversy surrounding the Karnataka chief minister has harmed the party’s anti-corruption campaign, he said the party feels steps to control the damage needs to be taken.

Interestingly, the party’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha SS Ahluwalia had announced during the winter session of parliament that a team of senior leaders had been constituted to look into the matter. Later other leaders, including Arun Jaitely, had reiterated it outside parliament.

Party sources hinted that the BJP’s good performance in the recently held panchyat elections was being considered by the high command as some kind of a referendum for Yeddyurappa’s continuation as chief minister.

“The issue should be treated as closed after the poll results as people have proved the prophets of doom wrong,” the sources said.

Amidst reports that Yeddyurappa has been favoured by the BJP high command for his continuation in the top slot, he came calling in the national capital on Tuesday to confabulate with senior leaders on his further course of action.

The visit came at a time when BJP chief Nitin Gadkari was out of city and preparing to leave for China on Wednesday.

Party circles were tightlipped on the purpose of his sudden visit to the capital. He held a meeting with Arun Jaitley.

A party source dismissed that the visit had anything to do with land transfer issue. “He had come here to seek advice from Jaitley on how to legally fight the vilification campaign started against him by the opposition parties,” the leader said.
