Even as BJP launched a broadside against Congress for what it described as complicity of the then party governments at the Centre and in Madhya Pradesh (MP) to facilitate escape of Warren Anderson to the US, veteran party leader Murli Manohar Joshi separately heaped scorn on former MP chief minister Arjun Singh for “providing safe passage” to the former Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) chief.

Demanding an “impartial” probe into the “Anderson escape” episode, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the inquiry should focus on identifying who (minister or bureaucrat) travelled with Anderson in the state aircraft, since the UCC chief was not entitled to one.

Raising the contentious issue of compensation, Javadekar expressed surprise that the government settled for $300 million after initially demanding a compensation of $2 billion.

Joshi questioned the role of Arjun Singh. “Arjun Singh was chairman of the group of ministers that was overseeing rehabilitation of Bhopal gas victims. The country wants to know what he did to provide relief to the people of Bhopal. He is now keeping quiet because he doesn’t have protection. People have come to know how the government allowed criminals to escape,” he said.

Criticising the role of judiciary, Joshi said the Supreme Court should reconsider. “The court should work to benefit the poor, not to protect businessmen. If the executive and judiciary don’t function for the benefit of people, people will lose faith in the democratic institutions,” he said.
