The ruling BJP in Uttarakhand has asked the Centre to launch a vigorous campaign for Nobel Peace prize to be given to the Mahakumbh Mela this year, a demand ridiculed by the Congress.

"This is not only historic but also unique that such a large number of people from all parts of the world came to Haridwar for Mahakumbh. We strongly believe that the Mahakumbh, which is a national festival, must be given this year's Nobel peace prize," BJP state president Bishan Singh Chufal said.

Chufal supported chief minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank's view, who recently said Mahakumbh Mela deserves a Nobel prize for being world's largest religious gathering that attracted more than five crore people from 140 countries.

However, Congress ridiculed the demand for Nobel prize saying there were incidents like stampede and alleged scandals which tainted the image of Uttarakhand.

"This demand is ridiculous especially when we are demanding a probe for financial irregularities. We have reports that the BJP government misappropriated huge funds meant for the Kumbh Mela," state Congress president Yashpal Arya said.

Narayan Singh Jantwal, President of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), the main regional party and an ally of the government, has also criticised the demand for the Nobel Peace prize saying that such awards are not given for big gatherings like Mahakumbh.

"The state government must come out with factual position whether such awards can be given for Kumbh Mela," Jantwal said.

Meanwhile, Nishank said he would launch a vigorous campaign over the issue.

"Already, I am receiving phone calls from intellectuals from various countries that the Nobel peace prize should be given to Mahakumbh and I strongly support their viewpoint." he said, thanking the entire world for making Mahakumbh Mela a
success.
