The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to celebrate Ahmedabad’s birthday in a big way. It plans to organize several events on the banks of the Sabarmati to mark the city’s 600th birthday on February 26.

On Monday, senior officials of the AMC set up a 5-member committee to work on the details of the mega celebrations planned for February 26. Mayor Kanaji Thakore, chairman of the AMC’s standing committee Asit Vora, municipal commissioner IP Gautam, BJP leader in the AMC Kamlesh Patel and leader of opposition in the civic body Surendra Baxi are members of this committee.

Giving information about the events planned for February 26, Thakore said the history and achievements of Ahmedabad would be displayed. Municipal commissioner Gautam said they were thinking of organising an ‘Ahmedabad Run’ to mark the city’s birthday. Other activities such as an elocution competition on Ahmedabad are also planned.

“We want schoolchildren to participate in all the events,” said Gautam. Baxi suggested that the celebrations should be organised with the active participation of all former mayors and civic body officials who had made a difference to Ahmedabad’s development.
