Bihar jail prisoners threaten hunger strike

Prisoners, mostly ultra-left activists, lodged in the high-security Beur Jail on the outskirts of the state capital here have threatened to launch a hunger strike seeking better facilities during their stay in judicial custody.
 
Beur jail superintendent OP Gupta said the prisoners had petitioned to the chief justice of India, chief minister Nitish Kumar and state Human Right Commission (SHRC) seeking the privileges.
 
The prisoners have demanded round-the-clock medical facilities, good food, minimum wages to undertrials deputed for different works, increase in daily wages of convicted inmates
 
They have alleged that on several occasions about their belongings being stolen allegedly by policemen and jail employees manning the wards and cells, official sources said.
 
Among other demands of the prisoners, include special prisoner van for female inmates, facility of a lady doctor for their treatment and full quota food for all, they said.
 
"Most of the signatories on the petitions are activists of the proscribed CPI (Maoist)", he said.
