The government on Tuesday ordered blocking 66 more web pages or URLs (universal resource locaters) containing communal hate campaign directed towards northeast people besides deciding to seek help from the US and Saudi Arabia to take action against web pages which some social networking websites have refused to take off citing jurisdictional problems.

Till Sunday the government had identified 254 such web pages but failed to block 38 because of refusal from the host websites. Sources said Twitter has not responded to India’s request so far.

The government has now decided to  legally approach Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Google by seeking help from authorities in the US and Saudi Arabia using bilaterally binding legal instruments.

Under the existing provisions, India has already requested US department of homeland security to help trace some users who routed their accounts through proxy servers to escape identification.

Sources said there was a definite plan to foment communal strife in India as early inquiries found that most of the hate campaigns were launched on the Internet between August 13 and 20 by using fake IDs. It coincides with killing of 29 Rohingya Muslims in clashes in Myanmar. The initial campaigns were directed to foment trouble in the northeast between indigenous people and Muslims belonging to Bangladesh.

“There is a common thread running in these hate campaigns aiming systematically to create communal tensions. This, we believe, was done purposely and with prior planning,” sources said.

India has already stated that about 38% of the inflammatory material originated in Pakistan. The agencies have identified websites of Jamaat-e-Islami, YEM TV.com and one web page on Facebook by the name Pakistan.tehreekiinsaaf.kohat.

Though home ministry said it has taken up the matter with Pakistan and would soon submit evidence to Islamabad in support of its allegations, sources in the ministry of external affairs insist the matter is yet to be been taken up with Pakistan at the diplomatic level.

They also denied reports that the Pakistan high commissioner to India, Salman Bashir may be summoned by the ministry of external affairs to hand over evidence of involvement of elements from across the border in whipping up communal tensions by posting incendiary material of a number of websites.
