The educational ties between Indian Institute of Management (IIMA) and Bhutan are set to get stronger.

After the immense popularity of executive courses offered by the premier management institute, Bhutanese government has extended invitation to IIMA to start full-time masters in business administration (MBA) courses in their country.

The proposal was presented to IIMA bosses during their recent visit to Bhutan. However, IIMA director Samir Barua said that the institute in yet to respond to the proposal. Further analysis needs to be done to check sustainability of the programme there, he said.

"Bhutanese government has invited IIMA to start a full-time MBA programme. They have offered to come up with infrastructure and we need to lend the intellectual support by sending faculty to run this programme. It is not feasible to invest in this programme fully," said Barua.

He, however, said that if this MBA course is offered in Bhutan, it will be tailor-made to benefit students in Bhutan and neighbouring countries.

Earlier, IIMA had organised an executive programme in Bhutan which saw participation from 55 students. Thirty of these were from Bhutan. The institute has planned another batch of this course in January 2012.
