Looking at the serious threat to world languages stock, Vadodara-based Bhasha Research and Publication Centre will now organise an international language festival called Bhasha Now Carnival, to be held at different parts of the country in February 2013.

Talking to DNA on phone, Dr GN Devy, a linguist and founder of Bhasha Research and Publication Centre, said that the event would be organised in India. He added that it would be held simultaneously at various locations, with the opening meeting in Delhi. "The concluding event will be held at Tejgadh. We intend to invite Prof. Amartya Sen, Prof. Noam Chomsky and Prof. William Labov as chief guests for the event," he said.

After the Bhasha Vasudha Global Conference, top experts from many countries met to decide on the future action plan, looking at the serious threat to the stock of world languages. "The scholars decided to convene a 'Bhasha Now' event in India in February 2013. The upcoming event will focus on situation of languages as they are, providing a snapshot of global language stock. The event will involve representatives of 7,000 languages all over the world," Devy said. It will also involve international institutions like UNESCO and various state governments, academic and research bodies as well as the participants, mainly students and young people from different countries.

An International Presidium of languages was formed. This presidium will work for an entire year to get volunteers within their countries. “We want to have at least one volunteer for each language of the world," Devy said. The presidium includes professors from 23 countries who will work in their respective countries to survey the diminishing languages and generate support for the cause.
