Constitutional protection forf 1.38 lakh Bengali Hindus residing in Assam was today demanded by the All Assam Bengali Youth Students' Federation (AABYSF).

Asking the All Assam Students Union to hold a 'thorough discussion', AABYSF Central Committee president Sukumar Biswas told reporters that it should ensure that Bengalis living in the state since March 25, 1971, the cut off date for updating the National Register of Citizens, are not deprived of their fundamental rights as citizens.

The government must also ensure the removal of the 'D' or doubtful voters tag of many Bengali Hindus who have been deprived of their voting rights in elections held during the last two decades.

Biswas said that the AABYSF was not opposed to updating of the NRC but wanted certain corrections in it so that Bengali Hindus in the state were not deprived of their basic rights as citizens.
