The city of Beijing today sought deeper cooperation with Delhi in diverse sectors like urban development and tourism.

Various areas for cooperation between the two cities were discussed during separate meetings the vice-mayor of Beijing, Ding Xiangyang, had with Lt governor Tejinder Khanna and chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

In the meeting with Dikshit, Xiangyang, who is leading a nine-member delegation, appreciated her efforts to change the face of Delhi through development works and sought deeper engagement between the two cities in diverse fields.

Besides her ministerial colleagues, chief secretary Rakesh Mehta and top officials of Delhi government were present in the meeting.

Cooperation in areas like social security, tourism and urban development was discussed extensively in the meeting, officials attending the meeting said.

Xiangyang said the delegation has come to Delhi with an aim to improve ties with the city.

In the meeting at Raj Bhavan, Khanna told the delegation that India and China have several common bonds and now "they should be strengthened further".

He said that difference of opinion can be there between the two friends, but it was important to proceed ahead in a proper manner discussing issues and resolving the same.

Dikshit apprised the delegation of her government's initiatives in improving quality of life in Delhi.

She also explained about various schemes being implemented by her government to ensure welfare of the poor and downtrodden.

The chief minister said that nine per cent of the total budget of Delhi government has been spent on health and 11% on education. Xiangyang informed that Beijing spends only 6% of total budget on health sector.

Delhi government is going to construct more than 1.5 lakh low-cost houses for the poor and weaker sections, Dikshit told the vice-mayor who invited the chief minister to visit Beijing.
