George Washington University of Law, USA, was declared the winner at the International Moot Court Competition held at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) on Sunday. The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and World Trade Institute (WTI) at Basel in Switzerland had organised the competition in which 38 universities, including five foreign universities, participated.

The objective of the competition was to create legal awareness as well as impart legal education among law students. The idea to organise the competition was mooted after the success of the first edition of moot competition organised in April 2009. Symbiosis Law College, Pune, was the runner up in the competition.

The theme of this year's moot court competition was 'International Trade Law'. Last year, the moot problem dealt with national security, breach of privacy and trade between countries, while this year the moot problem dealt with climate change and trade.

Earlier, GNLU had entered into a partnership with the World Trade Institute, wherein the WTI will award the winning team with a scholarship to attend its 5-week summer academy on international trade regulation. The WTI is one of the world's leading academic institutions dedicated to the regulation of international trade.

On Sunday, the final round of four-day competition was held. The competition had kick-started on February 3 at Town Hall.

Thereafter the preliminary rounds were held on February 4 and 5.
The quarterfinals and semifinals of the competition were held on February 6.

In the competition, the participants placed various cases before the judges. All rounds of the competition were judged by a panel of judges that included people from academia, law firms and practicing advocates.

In the final round, Christan Haberli (senior consultant WTI), Laxmi Kumaran (managing partner of law firm LKS), Oshima Sataro (member WTO appellant body), and Prof Bimal Patel (Director GNLU) judged the students.

In the valedictory function, Justice Cyriac Joseph of the Supreme Court, Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya, chief justice Gujarat High Court, and Supreme Court retired judge justice CK Thakkar were present.

GNLU student Aditya said, “Such type of moot competition is very helpful for students as we get acquainted with various legal news and development.”

He said as GNLU was the host to the competition, it could not participate but the session was very knowledgeable.
