An auto driver stole an ATM card of a passenger, and then withdrew Rs1.80 lakh with it in the span of two weeks from different ATMs. However, the victim only realised his loss when he checked his bank balance.

Dinesh Viras who filed the complaint with Vastrapur police on Tuesday, is the Bhavnagar branch manager of State Bank of India. He claimed that an auto driver stole his ATM card two weeks ago and withdrew money from his account.

Viras, 55, is a resident of Amba Township near Adalaj. On December 27, he came to the city in a private luxury bus, and took an auto to get home, at 6pm.

The auto driver asked Viras to step down near Sola Bridge, saying that his vehicle was having trouble on the ascent up the bridge. He asked Viras to walk to the top of the bridge and then board the auto again. Viras did so and left his luggage in the auto while legging it up the bridge.

Meanwhile, the auto driver stole an ATM card which was lying in a Viras’ black leather bag.

Viras didn’t see anything amiss when he boarded the auto again, but when he checked his bank account on Tuesday he found Rs1.8 lakh missing! He looked for his ATM card, which was missing from the leather bag. He realised that the auto driver had stolen it and withdrew money during that period.

Police investigation has revealed that Viras wrote the 4 digit PIN number on the cover of his ATM card, so that he didn’t have to remember it. However, while it proved greatly beneficial for the auto driver — it was disaster for the banker.
