Neighbouring Bangladesh has agreed to allow use of the water of the River Feni for irrigation and drinking purpose in Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura district, official sources said today.
Chief engineer of Tripura (Drinking water), Tapan Lodh said a five-member technical delegation of Bangladesh Water Development Board led by Md. Shidul Islam yesterday visited Sabroom town and held a meeting with a team of Public Health Engineers agreed to allow the use of the water for drinking and irrigation.
Lodh, who led the team of engineers of Tripura said the Bangladesh delegation agreed to the setting up of a 6.5 lakh gallon drinking water treatment plant and to allow farmers use of the river water for irrigation.
"We have also agreed to allow the farmers of Bangladesh to use the river water for irrigation and drinking water", Lodh told reporters.
He said, Bangladesh prime minister, Sheikh Hasina during her recent visit to India had agreed to resolve the long pending issue of sharing of water of River Feni and added yesterday's meeting was a follow up of the Delhi-Dhaka talks.
Lodh said a joint survey would be conducted on February 12 and after the survey was completed, work for construction of water treatment would be started.
He said the problems of water sharing of the River Feni remained unresolved since 1958 and the matter was discussed atmany meetings of the Joint River Commission.
