Munna Bajrangi, who was arrested by Delhi Police, was a "high profile contract killer whose signature style of killing was to hit his target in a moving car, police said today.

Bajrangi, allegedly a "top level extortionist" was arrested from Chinchoti in Malad West area on Mumbai-Surat Highway at around 5:30 pm yesterday by a team of Special Cell following a tip off provided by his accomplice Mahender Shetty, who was also apprehended.

Delhi police commissioner YS Dadwal said the arrests came following investigations into inputs that Bajrangi was trying to extort money from a Delhi businessman.

"On systematic analysis of every possible clue related to his movements, the team realised that Bajrangi is hiding somewhere in Malad area of Mumbai. A team was sent there October 21," Dadwal told reporters. The police team located the apartment where he was hiding for last several years and at around 2.30 pm they raided it and caught Shetty.

Bajrangi was allegedly involved in the high profile murder of BJP MLA Krishnananda Rai at the behest of a political rival Mukhtar Ansari in 2004. The case is being probed by CBI. "He is a very desperate criminal known for his high profile contract killings. He is learnt to have been a top level extortionist but no one dared to come forward for fear of reprisal. Bajrangi's signature style was killing his target in a moving car," Dadwal said.

"Bajrangi whose original name is Prem Prakash Singh is involved in 18 cases of murder, attempt to murder, and robbery in UP and Delhi. A reward of Rs5 lakh and Rs2 lakhs have been declared by CBI and UP police respectively for his arrest," Dadwal said. He made his presence felt in the UP crime scene in mid 1990's when he gunned down BJP leader Ram Chander Singh and his official bodyguard in Jaunpur.

In September 1998, he was intercepted by a team of Delhi Police which led to a gun battle in which Bajrangi was injured later arrested. However, he jumped bail later and went underground. Asked whether he any way involved in the murder of Delhi Police's encounter specialist Rajbir Singh, Dadwal said the murder case of Rajbir was being investigated by CBI.

"The only link with Rajbir and Bajrangi was that the police officer was in the Special Staff team which had the gun battle (with Bajrangi)," Dadwal said. In 2003, he also allegedly murdered another BJP leader Anil Rai in 2003 in Varanasi.

Krishnanand Rai, an MLA from Mohammadabad constituency in Ghazipur district, alongwith his seven supporters was shot dead in broad daylight near Goundour on November 29, 2005. A senior police official said that the arrest came after three years of hard work.

"About three years ago, Special Cell received information that Bajrangi was trying to spread his network in Delhi as well and was threatening businessmen," the official said.
