A conclave of saints in Ayodhya demanded on Thursday that home minister P Chidambaram and yoga guru Baba Ramdev be declared anti-national and criminal cases lodged against them.

The saints were reacting to the fatwa issued by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind at the Deoband seminary that Muslims should not sing Vande Mataram as the national song is against Islam.

“Vande Mataram, our country India and the Tricolour, all deserve the same respect,” Vishwa Sant Param Sangh vice-president and Sri Kalki Peethadheeshwar Acharya Pramod Krishnam said. “What is the difference between the Jamiat and the Hizbul Mujahideen now? It is amazing what Chidambaram was doing at the meeting where the language of the Taliban was being spoken.”

Head priest of the famous Hanuman Garhi temple Mahant Gyandas said, “Ramdev’s presence and his silence on the fatwa shows that his commercial interests have surpassed his nationalism.”

Jagadguru Shanka-racharya Jyotishpeethadheeshwar Madhavashram Maharaj described the Jamiat resolution as unfortunate.
