Avalanche threat forces shift of police station, treasury office in Himachal

The threat of an avalanche in view o continued snowfall has forced Lahaul and Spiti district administration to shift a police station and treasury office in Udaipur sub-division, official sources said today.

Police station in Udaipur and the treasury office has been shifted to makeshift locations in view of the threat of avalanche, deputy commissioner Ritesh Chauhan told PTI.

The Udaipur police station located at a height of 2642 metres with more than 25 policemen stationed there were shifted to a police family quarter, the DC said.

The treasury office has been functioning from a private residence which has been taken on rent till the situation improves.

The DC said that officials have been told to restrict their movement to avoid any untoward incident in view of snowfall in the district.

Cut off from rest of the world by road due to closure of Rohtang pass following continued snowfall, life has been thrown out of gear in Lahaul-Spiti.

While Keylong has 42 inches of snow, it is 60 inches in Udaipur and 26 inches in Kaza sub-division of the high altitude district.
