Outraged at the gang-rape of a student in the national capital, Noor Enayat, 27, a Delhi-based public relations professional, has called for an ‘Aurat Bandh’ campaign on December 26. Through her Facebook post, Enayat has urged women across the country to stop working on December 26.

“Bharat Bandh, Gujjar Bandh, Maharashtra Bandh — We’ve all seen innumerable times the mechanics of these bandhs and how they do NOT function. A woman gets gang-raped in a moving bus and the country stands spineless. Don’t step out of the house, don’t go anywhere unaccompanied , don’t wear revealing clothes — in short, stop living,” she writes on her campaign page on Facebook.

“Since the government of this nation fails us (women) yet again, it is now time to take matters into our own hands. This call goes out to ALL the women in the nation for an AURAT BANDH. Let us pledge our solidarity to the innumerable women being victimized simply for being women and not do any work for one day and let’s see how the society manages to function. And by no work, I mean not to go to office, not take care of families etc etc… No shopping, no retail therapy of any kind...Not Bharat Bandh, but Aurat Bandh!”

She has also sent e-mails to women’s organisations informing them about the campaign. By Wednesday evening, 4,037 invites were sent; 248 confirmed participation. “Over 45% of India’s corporate workforce consists of women. Imagine if 45% of the workforce does not work,” Enayat said. “When a mosquito sucks our blood, we don’t spare it. Why should we spare men who oppress us?”
