Troubles seem to be only growing by the day for Team Anna. Arvind Kejriwal was slapped with a fresh notice by the Income Tax department, asking him to pay Rs9 lakh in dues even as an alleged attempt to attack the team was foiled in Meerut on Friday.

The Meerut police arrested four Akhand Hindustan Morcha supporters on Friday an hour before the anti-corruption activists were to address a meeting in the city.

Meanwhile, the I-T department asked Kejriwal, a IRS officer, to clear his dues to the government by October 27.  The dues had accumulated for violating clauses of a bond under which he had gone on a study leave for two years. When the Delhi CCIT had written to him in 2007 and 2008 for clearance of his dues, Kejriwal had responded that they may be waived.

In August, when the I-T department issued a notice to him, Kejriwal replied, saying he had not violated any condition.
On Friday, Kejriwal said he would take a decision on the issue in the next couple of days.

The arrests in Meerut came an hour before members of the Team Anna were scheduled to address a public gathering at Gymkhana grounds around 3.30 pm.  The police detained them on grounds that they could disturb peace. “Four persons belonging to the Akhand Hindustan Morcha were detained in the afternoon before the start of the rally but were let off after the rally ended. It was just a preventive action. They wanted to give a memorandum to  Kejriwal personally,” said Meerut DIG Prem Prakash said.

Earlier Team Anna member Kiran Bedi had tweeted: “Information is that our public meetings in Meerut today will be disturbed by some vested interests. Alerting local police..”
