Expressing concern over the continuing attacks on Indian students Down Under, Congress today said the Australian government should take it as a matter of utmost urgency.
"It is a matter of great concern. We expect the government of Australia to take this as a matter of utmost urgency and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future," party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here.
Nitin Garg (21), who migrated from Punjab and had permanent residency in Australia, was stabbed to death in Melbourne's northern suburb of West Footscray on January 2.
Natarajan said external affairs minister SM Krishna has already taken serious note of the continuing attacks on young people of Indian origin in Australia and there is strong possibility that the attacks are racially motivated.
She said the attacks cannot be treated as "random acts of violence" as these are directed at students and young people of Indian origin.
"We expect all steps to be put in place. An advisory has been issued... Those guilty of racist attacks must be brought to book so that this does not happen again," the spokesperson added.
