Winter was back with a vengeance as Amdavadis sipped steaming hot tea and munched snacks to enjoy the season’s coldest day. The city on Thursday recorded a minimum temperature of 5.2 degree celsius — the coldest ever recorded for the month of February since 2002.
The maximum temperature was 21.9 degree celsius, 8 degrees
below normal.
“The cold wave condition is likely to prevail for one more day although temperatures may rise a bit. Saturday will see the temperatures marginally returning to normal. This is the lowest temperature recorded in this season,” said Kamaljit Ray, director IMD, Gujarat.
She said the in the previous years, the lowest temperature recorded for the month of February was in 2000. “That year, the temperature had touched 4.8 degree celsius,” said Ray.
Meanwhile, chai kitlis saw an unusual rise in number of patrons as Amdavaids liberally gulped down their favourite beverage. Weather suddenly became the ‘hot’ topic of conversation.
“I have been in Ahmedabad for the last eight years but have never experienced the temperatures dip so much. This has to be the coldest February ever. Had someone told me three days ago that it would be this cold, I would have laughed at them for, I believed that winter was over,” said Lalita Sinha, a resident of Sola Road.
Across the state, night temperatures rose in parts of Kutch and fell appreciably in other parts of Gujarat. Naliya recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 2 degree celsius.
