The Trinamool Congress entering the electoral battle in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa purely on the basis of Mamata Banerjee’s political successes in West Bengal “just may not” fetch any positive outcome for the party, insiders feel.
Some senior TMC leaders admitted to DNA that the party leadership did not see much electoral benefits coming out of UP and Uttarakhand. “But, yes we see some positive outcome in Manipur,” they added.
Banerjee’s entering electoral fray in UP and Uttarakhand without any political base or organisation in the two states is seen as a sort of wild goose chase. Ironically, some the TMC candidates in UP even do not know the election symbol of the party.
“Though they know Banerjee personally because of her having been railway minister and now as West Bengal chief minister, that “did not necessarily give us any guarantee of success”, a party leader said.
Party insiders felt that Banerjee may not go to UP for campaign but the issues that would be raised may not be very happy ones for the Congress. The issues would include FDI in retail, frequent price hike in fuel.
Another party leader said, “The results would give us some hints about how we should go about in 2014 general elections in these states.”
