Arunima's sister appeals to UP govt to ensure women's safety

'I want to appeal to the state government to ensure the security of women travelling in trains so that such tragic incidents do not happen again with anyone,' Arunima's sister Lakshmi said.

The sister of national-level sportswoman Arunima Sinha alias Sonu, who lost her leg after allegedly being pushed from a moving train, today appealed to the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure the security of women travelling in trains.

"I want to appeal to the state government to ensure the security of women travelling in trains so that such tragic incidents do not happen again with anyone," Arunima's sister Lakshmi said.

According to Lakshmi, Arunima's condition was stable, though she had fever.

"Doctors have asked us to wait for two days after which Arunima might undergo surgery, if needed," she said.

The 23-year-old national level volleyball player lost her leg after she was pushed out of the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on April 11 by three men who were trying to rob her.

The incident took place between Chenati and Bareilly railway stations when the sportswoman was travelling to Gautam Buddha Nagar to appear in a CISF recruitment examination.

A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery) of the IPC has been registered against unidentified persons by the government railway police.

In the FIR, Arunima stated that three to four youths were fighting in the train and one of them fell on her, Bareilly GRP incharge Anees Ahmad had said.

Lakshmi said an railway police force official visited her in the hospital at about 2.30am and gave her Rs5,000 for the treatment. He told her that a probe was on into the incident.

"Till now the treatment is almost free. We have to spend a nominal amount," she added.

Meanwhile, terming the incident as tragic, opposition parties including Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party here said it exposed tall claims of the BSP about good law and order in the state.

These parties have demanded a thorough inquiry into the matter and immediate arrest of all the accused.
