The bookies who shifted from Mumbai to Ahmedabad because of increased police vigilance after the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, and who were arrested by the Ahmedabad rural police a few days ago, have revealed their connection with agents in Gulf countries. DNA earlier reports that they had shifted their base because of the increased police vigilance.

Around one week ago, the police raided the Sun City Township, and arrested seven people and seized goods including 45 mobile phones and a car. The police then traced the calls made from the mobile phones, which revealed that the hub of their activity has shifted from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

“According to the decoding and out investigations, we found that there was a very large number of transactions with Gulf countries and that that bookies have shifted their main centre from Mumbai to Ahmedabad,” said range DIG BD Waghela.

Over the past three months, the bookies had more than 150 telephone conversations with agents in Gulf countries including Oman, Egypt and Bahrain, and even the UK. The seven people who were arrested last week turned out to be subordinates of the main bosses in Mumbai. The latter have been identified as Ketan Gandhi, Naresh Dahisar and Jethalal. The police visited Borivali and Kandivali in Mumbai to locate them, but were unable to do so.

The police said there was a high possibility of those arrested dealing in hawala too. They have several dealings in Gujarat and a large network in Surat, Bhavnagar, Khedalu, Palanpur, Unjha, Mehsana etc. The seven people who were arrested revealed that they had dealings of Rs50 lakh per match. They would conduct their activities from their residence, over the phone. The operation was headed by Rikin Patel, one of those arrested.

The police further said many more names will be revealed soon and that these may include the names of many builders. The police have also sought the help of the Mumbai police in this matter. A connection with Dinesh Kalgi is also being investigated.
