MUMBAI/AHMEDABAD: Union HRD minister Arjun Singh on Friday endorsed the long-pending proposal of appointing foreign teachers in the country's premium institutions like IITs and IIMs.
"Following dearth of qualified teachers in the field of higher education, we have no problem inviting foreign nationals or people with Indian origin as teachers for IITs and IIMs provided they fulfil the stipulated legal formalities," Arjun Singh said.
Addressing the second Rajiv Gandhi Oration at the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus on Friday, Singh also said the teachers would be on central government's pay-roll.
Ashok Misra, director of IIT-Bombay, said, "The Union HRD ministry's decision would definitely benefit IITs by raising the standard of education."
IIM-A dean Jayanth Varma had told DNA on an earlier occasion that the institute has an immediate requirement of at least 16 more faculty members to cater to the current student strength. This scenario is similar for almost all educational institutes in the country.
Eight new permanent faculty members have been recruited over the past two years, as against which six senior faculty members have retired during the same duration. The total number of faculty members therefore has effectively gone up by two, at 84 in July 2007.
