APJ Abdul Kalam to award inventive minds at IGNITE-11

Former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will deliver a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and award winners of IGNITE-11, a competition organised by National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI), state education boards and other partners. 

Dr Kalam on Thursday interacted with students at IIMA and saw their presentation on social issues as part of the seminar on 'Globalisation and Resurgent India through Innovative Transformations'.

Dr Kalam will present awards to 21 winners in different categories involving school students' national ideas and innovations in competition.

The winners were chosen from 4,104 submissions of students from 25 states and union territories for IGNITE-11, which ran from October 16, 2010 to September 10, 2011. 

A desktop machine to clean and separate broken rice grains and impurities from whole grains, a four-legged walker with height adjustable legs, device to assist low vision people, multi-purpose room air processing machine, system to detect computer vision syndrome, blind navigation system with terrain mapping are some creations that have been selected for the awards.

An exhibition of all award-winning entries has also been organised. All ideas and innovations that have been given awards will be provided incubation support including prototyping and patenting in students' names.

NIF, an autonomous body of the department of science and technology, Union government, has been actively engaged in promoting creativity and innovation in society through volunteers of Honey Bee Network, CBSE network and others. IGNITE is an effort to focus primarily on the creativity of children.
