Nearly two weeks after he junked the 2G loss estimation of the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) and called it “sensational and erroneous”, telecom minister Kapil Sibal came in for stick from the Supreme Court on Friday.
Calling Sibal’s action “unfortunate’’, the court asked the CBI to probe the 2G spectrum allocation issue without fear and not be influenced by the comments of others.
“The minister should behave with some sense of responsibility,” a bench of justices G S Singhvi and AK Ganguly said. Sibal said he “meant no disrespect to any institution,’’ but canards had to be responded to.
“I have neither directly nor indirectly tried to interfere with any process going on,” he said.
The court’s remark followed Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy’s contention that Sibal’s statement might influence the CBI probe.
