When income tax officials knock at a suspect tax evader’s door there are good chances that the latter will lose his cool.

But these tax sleuths got a vastly different experience when they raided two real estate groups in Vadodara recently which yielded Rs104 crore unaccounted money.

One of the group’s partners not only welcomed the I-T men but also promptly admitted to  evasion of tax. Moreover, he told his 21 partners to also do the same without any fuss! In fact, the taxmen were taken aback when they learned that the builder had faced similar situations four separate times in his career as a builder.

According to sources, the builder has dozens of residential and commercial projects in his name including various industrial parks in Vadodara. Sources said that the builder was not surprised at all when dozens of tax officials thronged his house.

“He was polite and co-operative. After our inquiries and investigation into the details of his business dealings, the builder readily agreed to admit to the tax evasion.

Further, he co-operated in the investigation of his 21 partners who also admitted to unaccounted income they had earned over the years,” a source involved in the raids said.

The builder admitted to having Rs35 crore as income without being taxed. Further, he also asked his partners to pay up --- which they did at once to the tune of about Rs38 lakh.

The raid resulted into the revelation of a total of Rs104 crore from two groups including this builder.

Sources further said that the builder has experienced four such situations before, when tax officials thronged his house during the last 30 years.

They said the builder had been raided in the late 80s, in the mid 90s and there was an I-T survey on the builder in 2004.

“Normally, when we raid someone with a potential lead of tax evasion the person gets agitated and the initial few hours are wasted. In many cases the people simply refuse to realize the fact that tax officials have arrived at their houses or offices,” said a highly placed source.
