There is much more to parking area than just a dead space with vehicles. The idea is to have an integral approach to it, says Caroline Bos, an urban planner from Netherlands.

Bos was in Ahmedabad to deliver a lecture at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept) University on the subject 'From Urbanisation and Architecture and Back Again". Bos, co-founder and principal urban planner of Dutch architectural design office UNStudio, talked about the contemporary distinction between the server and the served spaces. She also discussed patterns of living that demand more integral approach to architecture and urban design within spaces programmed for varied experiences.

Bos shared some of the novel building designs by her company in different pockets of the world. While talking to DNA, she said that parking space should be an integral part of design and elements should be related to design quality and use of space.

"The idea should be to give quality space. Even if you talk about parking space in hotel or any commercial establishment, the entry point is the parking space. It acts like the lobby of the building and hence should be an integral part of the design. For one building, we designed spacious parking space where we organized fashion show and film festival," she said. She added that they had divided the parking area in three zones- yellow, red and orange - to make it easy for people to remember exact space of parking. According to Bos, parking space should be designed for mix use of space.
