An attempt of self-immolation over Fanaa

JAMNAGAR: A 25-year-old youth set himself on fire during the show of Fanaa in Jamanagar's Ambar cinema on Sunday afternoon to oppose Aamir Khan over his statements on the Narmada issue. According to the police, Pravin Gopaldas Joshi, a factory worker from Rajkot, set himself on fire during the interval of Sunday noon show of Fanaa. Pravin was heard shouting slogans against Aamir Khan when he came out burning from the ladies toilet. According to the police, he had specially come to Jamnagar to do this.

Pravin was rushed to a nearby hospital with 40 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment. However, according to police sources, his condition is serious and they are in the process of taking his statement.

Jamnagar Superintendent of Police RR Bhagat told DNA, "He belongs to Porbandar and works in a Rajkot-based factory. He had come specially to set himself on fire to oppose Aamir Khan over his controversial statement over the Narmada issue. He arrived on Jamnagar railway station at around 3:30 pm and went straight to the Ambar cinema, where the show of movie Fanaa had just started. He must have waited there till the interval and entered the hall during the interval when the viewers were getting back to the hall."

"Pravin went straight to the ladies toilet and once inside he sprinkled kerosene on himself and set himself on fire at around 5:45 pm. Then he rushed out in flames and started shouting slogans against Aamir Khan. Pravin had brought a five-litre can full of petrol with him," sad Bhagat.

According to Vimal Madam, the owner of Ambar cinema, which was recently in news as the first cinema in Gujarat to screen Fanaa, said, "This person set himself on fire in the urinals during the interval around 5:45 pm and then rushed out shouting. People present there doused the fire and then he was rushed to the nearby GG Hospital." According to Madam, Pravin had not bought tickets for the show and must have entered the hall during the interval.

According to police sources, a bag was also found from Pravin which carries a letter addressed to the Chief Minister Narendra Modi besides his ration card and his educational certificates. The letter says that incidents like this will be repeated every time any film acted by Aamir is screened in any part of the state. The letter mentions that a copy is also forwarded to Superintendent of Police, Jamnagar.
