The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells its dairy products under the brand name ‘Amul’, has decided to increase milk prices by Rs2 per litre from next week. Amul Gold will cost Rs30 per litre while Amul Shakti will cost Rs28 a litre.

The price of Amul Taaza has been increased by just Rs1 per litre.  Amul had last increased Shakti and Gold prices in February by Rs2 a litre. Explaining why they had to hike prices within five months, federation officials said their hands had been forced because of the delayed monsoon and the recent hike in fuel prices.

“There are several reasons why we decided to increase milk prices,” said RS Sodhi, in-charge managing director, GCMMF. “Procurement cost has gone up to 30%, and fuel prices have also increased. Moreover, because of the delayed monsoon, fodder has also become costlier.”

Amul has decided to hike milk prices first in Delhi and then in Ahmedabad.

In Delhi, milk will be dearer by Rs2 a litre from Sunday while, in Ahmedabad, it will be increased a day or two later.
