The new police commissioner of Ahmedabad, Amitabh Pathak, will take charge of his post anytime after September 13.Pathak is now on leave and abroad. He
is expected to return on September 9.
Pathak, an IPS officer of 1977 batch, was named the commissioner of Ahmedabad on Tuesday. This is the first time that the officer has been appointed as the police commissioner of any of the four cities of Gujarat.
SK Saikia, who was transferred to state human rights commission, will continue functioning as CP till Pathak takes charge.
A significant milestone in Pathak's career till now is that he had headed the special team formed to investigate the Ruchi Chavda kidnapping and murder case in 1999 as inspector-general of Gandhinagar Range.
However, Pathak is not free from controversies. He is one of the 62 persons named by Jakia Zafri in her complaint filed in the Supreme Court in connection with the 2002 riots cases.
Two British nationals - Saeed Dawood and Sakil Dawood - were killed in Prantij town of Sabarkantha during post-Godhra riots. The area comes under Gandhinagar Range of which Pathak was IG at that time.
