With an aim to ease out traffic congestion in the city, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to carry out traffic and transportation survey to ease out city's traffic woes. The survey will help the civic body to plan bridges and junction development taking into consideration city's traffic needs in the next ten years.

The civic body plans to rope in Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) of the Union government's science and industrial ministry for the compressive traffic and transportation survey. "Traffic is a burning issue, so the need of the hour is to prepare a plan in advance so that people should not face much problem," said an official of AMC's engineering department.

The survey will cover city traffic characteristic and quality, will estimate rise in traffic in 10 years and also assess typical junction improvement need at places identified for the project. The civic body has identified 23 traffic junctions in the city for the project aimed at mapping future traffic.

It has identified 17 traffic junctions in city's west and new west zone including Anjali Cross Roads, Paldi Cross Roads, Income-Tax Cross Roads, Vadaj Junction, Vijay Cross Roads, Shyamal Cross Roads, Parimal Garden Cross Roads, Prahladnagar Cross Roads, Door Darshan Cross Roads and Sattadhar Cross Roads, among others. One traffic junction each in north, south and central zone has been included in the list of traffic junctions to be covered under the survey while three junctions from east zone will also be covered.

AMC estimates expenditure around Rs1.40 lakh per traffic junction for mapping traffic situation and predicting traffic problems based on the data. The municipal commissioner has put a proposal before AMC's standing committee to approve cost of Rs40 lakh for this project and give powers to the municipal commissioner for signing agreement with the institute.

The committee is likely to take a final call in its meeting on Thursday. The institute is likely to spend 2-3 days at each traffic junction to collect data and will need a few more months for analyzing data.
