Civic body now awaits completion of garden at Sabarmati riverfront.
While the entire nation is looking forward to the completion of India's first riverfront project along river Sabarmati, the civic body is yet to decide the exact date for its inauguration which is pending for the past few months.
The walkway of the riverfront was scheduled to be inaugurated during the Kankaria carnival in December 2011, but it was postponed due to unknown reasons. The walkway between Subhash Bridge and Dadhichi Rishi Bridge on the eastern and the western banks of the river (between Gandhi Bridge and Nehru Bridge and between Ambedkar Bridge and Vasna Barrage) was postponed to January 2012.
However, citizens do not seem to be bothered about the official inauguration of the riverfront as they enjoy evening strolls along the river.
While some of the construction is over and the lower promenade has been constructed, the gardening and civil work on some of the stretches is being carried out.
Crores of rupees have been spent on the construction of Sabarmati riverfront and the work is being completed on different stretches. When DNA asked municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra about the inauguration, he answered that a garden was being developed there currently and the riverfront would be inaugurated once the work was completed. "It will take a few months for the walkway to be inaugurated as we are planning to develop it and inaugurate the whole place," added Mohapatra. He further said that once completed, the walkway and riverfront would be a treat for the eye with clean water of the river and garden nearby. Officials of AMC told DNA that the date for inauguration had not been fixed yet, but it might be during March- April 2012.
Talking about the immediate plans, executive director of Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), Dilip Mahajan said that they were planning to extend a few km nearby the walkway and start water sports at the riverfront. Mayor Asit Vora could not be reached for his comments on the inauguration.
