Nimesh Shelat, a city-based physiotherapist and resident of University area, who regularly visits Star Bazaar had to return disappointed on Friday without completing his shopping on Friday. Many others too, like Shelat, returned with empty bags.

Reason? Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Friday evening sealed Tata Group's Star Bazaar at Satellite Road as it didn't fulfill the fire safety criteria on its premises.

The fire and emergency services of AMC had issued a notice to the Star Bazaar for installation of fire safety system within a period of seven days. However, the company failed to comply with the norms, and the sate and town development department of AMC's new west zone swung into action and sealed the hypermarket.

"Star Bazaar premises was actually passed as separate shops. However, this was later turned into special purpose building that requires fire safety system," said MF Dastoor, chief fire officer of AMC's fire and emergency services. As per the provisions of Bombay Province Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act, the company was given seven days notice to rectify the situation, Dastoor said, adding that the fire safety system was required for Star Bazaar only and not for the entire building. The hypermarket falls under the special purpose category. When contacted by DNA, a Star Bazaar spokesperson said, "We had a visit from the fire department today and the officials have advised us to close our store at Satellite Road at the earliest possible. Star Bazaar has an impeccable record in safety and security of its customers." The spokesperson added that they were in talks with the fire department so as to let them open the market for customers again at their earliest possible. The company may have to incur a revenue loss as it may remain closed in the weekend because it is not likely that the company would be able to install the fire safety system within a short span.
