The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has awarded the contract for installation of 'door frame metal detectors' at four hospitals —VS Hospital, LG Hospital, Shardaben Hospital, and the CH Nagri Hospital. The civic body has approved Rs7,80,850 for the installation of the metal detectors.

As per a survey of the security needs of the hospitals conducted by Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES), the metal detector door frames will be set up at 14 different entrances of the hospitals. The metal detectors are designed to detect arms like knives or pistols that may be hidden in the clothes of a person.

The AMC is also considering deploying constables and police sub-inspectors at the VS Hospital. City mayor Asit Vora said the proposal to deploy constables at VS Hospital had been discussed with the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

"We have requested the DCP to post 3-4 constables and one police sub-inspector at the VS Hospital," Vora said. He added that he was hopeful the DCP will look into the matter and deploy the constables and a PSI for the security of the hospital.

Sources said demand for greater security at AMC-run hospitals had increased after the gruesome murder at LG Hospital in Maninagar a few weeks back. Hence, after consulting the AFES, the municipal commissioner had made a proposal to the standing committee for the installation of the door frame metal detectors at the four hospitals. The proposal was accepted by the standing committee which on Thursday awarded the contract for the metal detectors to Amix Corporation.
