Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Sunday condoled the death of Bollywood's evergreen star Dev Anand, saying the film world had lost a true genius.

"Dev Anand was a true evergreen star and with his death an era has come to an end. For a career spanning over more than five decades, Dev Anand gave us films which will stay entrenched in our minds for years on," Soni said in a message.

The actor passed away last night in London following a cardiac arrest.

Soni hailed his commitment to social issues besides his cinematic brilliance.

"His commitment to social issues was unparallelled and his cinematic brilliance in projecting those issues set new standards. He will always be remembered for his iconic presence and melodious music which cuts across generations.

"He was truly a multi-faceted performer as an actor, director and producer, and his death has caused an irreparable loss. The film fraternity has lost a true genius," Soni said.
