Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh is not friends with many people in his party, but he shares a special relationship with party chief Mulayam Singh. However, it seems he’s going to fall of out favour there too.

In an interview to a Hindi news channel, Singh said Mulayam was so confident of winning in the SP stronghold of Firozabad that he did not even campaign there. “These people made the mistake of thinking that this (Firozabad) was their stronghold, similar to the Raebareli or Amethi strongholds of Indiraji or Soniaji or Rahulji. But look at the amount of time these leaders spent in their constituencies. But Mulayam Singhji behaved symbolically like Mayawati and did not campaign on the ground at all. This was our complacency,” he told the interviewer. A transcript of the interview is with DNA.

This wasn’t the only negative reference about Mulayam or his family. Amar accused Mulayam’s son Akhilesh of keeping him out of the loop in Firozabad, and then blaming people close to him for not being part of the campaign. “Did Akhilesh ask Sanjay Dutt to campaign? Had he asked, Sanjay would have done it. Forget that. Jaya Prada and Jaya Bachchan are our own MPs. If he had asked them, would they not have stayed for with Dimple for 20-25 days?” he said.

Singh’s interview has embarrassed the SP. Akhilesh Yadav, who was greeted by a barrage of questions on Monday, only said, “I have known Amar Singhji as my chacha (uncle) since my childhood… I will not comment on his statements.”
