CBI director Ashwani Kumar has reportedly written to the cabinet secretary, urging him to release senior IPS officer and key Babri Masjid demolition witness Anju Gupta for an important court hearing on March 23.

The then additional superintendent of police, Faizabad, was attached to LK Advani when kar sevaks demolished the controversial structure and had recorded her statement with the CBI. Now, the agency wants Gupta to record her testimony before a Raebareli court on Tuesday.

In her statement to the CBI, she had reportedly said that Advani asked her what was happening at the mosque, after which she called up the control room and was told that kar sevaks were all over the structure and were demolishing it.Gupta said none of the leaders made any attempt to stop the demolition. “Advani was more worried about kar sevaks falling from the dome and dying,” she is reported to have told the CBI.

Gupta also reportedly said she saw Sadhvi Ritambhara and Uma Bharti hugging and congratulating each other and Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi as the structure was being brought down.
She reportedly said as Advani started addressing kar sevaks, their mood became more aggressive.
