All efforts would be made to expose those behind the killing of Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees chief Moulvi Showkat Ahmad Shah, JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik said today.

If militants have killed Shah then they have no right to claim that they are waging jehad here, Malik told a dharna which was held to protest the Kashmiri leader's killing in an IED blast last Friday.

"How can the killer claim that he is waging jehad? He is a coward and a killer (of innocent people)," Malik said.

The JKLF chairperson, who was very close to Shah, said he welcomed the United Jehad Council's statement and sought its cooperation in exposing the killers of the cleric.

Local media reports yesterday said that the jehad council has expressed its willingness to cooperate in exposing the killers of Shah.

Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who was also present at the protest, said the separatists will not remain silent and "mistakes of the last 20 years will not be repeated."

Mirwaiz's father Moulvi Mohammad Farooq was killed in 1990. Even though the separatists maintained silence over the assassination and government blamed Hizbul Mujahideen, a senior Hurriyat leader admitted earlier this year that he was killed by militants.

"Who are behind this conspiracy, what are their motives? What groups or agencies do they belong to? We have to expose them," Mirwaiz said.

The separatist leaders decided to continue with their Friday protest and will assemble in Jamia Masjid here next week.

Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani did not attend the protest and proceeded to Baramulla where he was scheduled to offer Friday prayers.

Geelani was stopped half-way at Mirgund and later asked to return, Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar said.
