The Gujarat high court on Wednesday granted transit anticipatory bail to Alka Desai, wife of former president of Medical Council of India (MCI) Ketan Desai. The court also asked her to take bail from the CBI court in Delhi. Alka Desai had sought transit anticipatory bail after her name appeared in the case filed by CBI against Desai, for having disproportionate assets.
Confirming the development RJ Goswami, advocate of Desai said the court has granted bail on the condition that she seek the bail from a regular court in Delhi.
"Meanwhile she should appear before the CBI for interrogation on
July 9 or 10. However, the court has protected her from arrest till her application filed before the Delhi court is not decided. So till then the CBI cannot arrest her." CBI had registered a disproportionate assets case against former MCI chief Ketan Desai, his wife and mother in May. The three had assets worth over Rs24 crore, more than the known sources of their income.
The former MCI president was arrested on April 22 by CBI along with three others for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs2 crore to grant permission to Gyan Sagar Medical College in Patiala to recruit a fresh batch of students.
The four accused were booked by CBI under various provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, dealing with inducing a public servant to accept bribe, criminal misconduct and payment of money.
Subsequent searches at various premises of Desai unearthed huge amount of cash, investments and gold, all worth several crores of rupees.
