Airport monkeys in for some shock in Ahmedabad

'The animals will not sustain even minor injuries but the electric shock may prevent them from hopping over the boundary. We have been facing lots of problems because of monkeys as they hop around the aircrafts and the runways, posing a major threat to the safety of hundreds of passengers,' says the authorities.

The monkey menace seems to have turned into a conflict between man and animal at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport in Ahmedabad. Unable to get rid of stray monkeys which threaten the lives of hundreds of air travellers, airport officials are now trying to make the primates hop a little bit more!

The airport officials have started a pilot project in order to get rid of the menace caused by the primates. They are fencing the boundary wall with solar power electric wires. So, whenever a monkey touches the wire, it will get an electric shock which will be mild — but strong enough to scare the intruder and make him hop about!

"The animals will not sustain even minor injuries but the electric shock may prevent them from hopping over the boundary. We have been facing lots of problems because of monkeys as they hop around the aircrafts and the runways, posing a major threat to the safety of hundreds of passengers," airport officials said.

As of now the fencing is being done on a pilot project basis but if the new arrangement fetches good results, the entire boundary wall will be fenced. Officials said that despite several attempts jointly by the Ahmedabad Municipal Cooperation and state Forest Department, no concrete result has emerged.

"We just don't know what to do with the animals. The concerned authorities are trying to get rid of animals and birds while in the neighbourhood surrounding the airport people offer edibles to these animals. Our job is to secure the lives of hundreds of passengers who land or fly from Ahmedabad airport. We are doing our best to work out the correct solution to a serious problem," said an official.

This year the monkey menace, indeed, has gone terribly out of hand. Officials said that the animals jump the boundary wall and hop around the runway. Many times flights had to be cancelled or had narrow escapes.
