In a humane move, the administration has decided to arrange transportation fare to AIDS-affected children going to anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centers in Ganjam district of Orissa, the first such initiative in the state.

Official sources said at the meeting of the district AIDS prevention and control center (DAPCC) the authorities also decided to provide transport fare to one person escorting the child in Ganjam, which has the highest number of HIV positives in the entire state.

"We have decided to provide bus fare to the AIDS affected child and his escort, for the shortest possible route to the ART center," district collector V K Pandian said on Sunday.

The expenses will be footed by the district Red Cross, he said.

According to the latest health reports, the district has 8,005 HIV positive people, the highest number in Orissa.

An estimated 1365 persons, including 62 children (under 14) were taking ART in the district, Medical Officer (in-charge of AIDS) B C Mohapatra said.

While the main ART center is functioning at M K C G Medical College and Hospital here, four link centers are at work in Aska, Bhanjanagar, Khallikote and Polasara areas.

"The move will help poor children in getting regular check-up and treatment at ART centers," the collector said.

He, however, said the DAPCC requested the government to extend such facility to all the persons suffering from AIDS.

The state government has been giving a monthly allowance of Rs200 for each HIV positive person, irrespective of his/her age.

In Ganjam district, 3824 persons are benefited by the scheme.
